September is Childhood Cancer Awareness and we’re proud to support families like Mabel’s, who want to share their experiences. Mabel’s mum, Nicky, refers to “the unbearable news” as Mabel’s diagnosis was given to her, and the fact that, Mabel has now been dealing with cancer for over two years, with some weeks left of treatment still to complete. Nicky states: “Cancer changes everything. Mabel just wants her life back. Almost a quarter of her childhood has been taken by cancer, but she smiles every day.”
And Super Mabel and her brilliant friends certainly have something to smile about. They have raised the incredible sum of over £4,000 for Supershoes by undertaking a sponsored walk, which was completed as Mabel’s 1st year since diagnosis was reached. What makes this walk even more extraordinary, is that Mabel completed it on crutches, having broken her foot due to a condition brought about by an aspect of her treatment. When walking became too much, Mabel’s friends pulled her on a special wagon: what an achievement!
Mabel’s journey since being diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia has been, to quote Nicky, “horrendous,” dealing with the “endless list” of sickness and side effects during treatment. Thankfully, Mabel has been responding well to treatment, and the family’s hope is that she makes it to the end of her maintenance treatment stage with as little drama as possible.
Go, Team Mabel! We’re all rooting for you!
