Super Francesca's Story August 2022

Unexplained tummy pains after a fall led Francesca's family to a devastating diagnosis.

Super Francesca’s Journey

A minor fall, and unexplained tummy pain caused Francesca’s mum and dad to look further for a diagnosis. They were not expecting cancer in the form of a Wilms’ tumour. Francesca has had two rounds of chemotherapy and her left kidney has been removed. She is now on maintenance chemotherapy until February 2023.

Super Francesca’s Diagnosis

Around 90 children are diagnosed with renal (kidney) tumours every year in the UK. Of these approx 80 are Wilms' tumour. Find out more about Wilms Tumour

The Supershoes

Francesca asked for rainbow colours, tulips, bluebells and daffodils on her Supershoes, as well as Miraculous Ladybug and a baby unicorn. Super Artist Claudia was only too happy to oblige! Francesca wears her Supershoes to her treatment sessions, so she can show them to everyone.

Super Francesca’s shoes were painted by super artist Claudia.
Over the last 10 years Claudia has worked in education with children ages 3 - 11 years, using her creative skills to create interesting wall displays and also her musical streak in the school orchestra and choir. For the last 2 years she was pastoral lead at a primary school helping children to cope with any issues they had, bereavement, parent separation, illness etc … & last year Claudia decided to become a driving instructor and is currently training young and old adults to overcome/cope with anxiety that driving can give. “I absolutely love the idea that I can support children/young people who are poorly and painting shoes that are unique only to them. I am thrilled that supershoes are now able to support young adults by including them in Supershoes referrals too. What an honour!”
